Musical Joy

Angtoria is a symphonic metal band that consists of British singer Sarah Jezebel Deva of Cradle of Filth and Swedish musical brothers Chris Rehn, formerly of Abyssos, and Tommy Rehn, formerly of Moahni Moahna. Singer Sarah Jezebel Deva, who has also worked with such bands as Therion, Mortiis, and Mystic Circle, joined the brothers in 2001 to create the band. The name comes from the band that Chris and Tommy had formed earlier in life but had laid dormant for years. The band started with a friendship forged between both Sarah and Chris when they were touring in 2001. They went on to produce a film soundtrack sounding cd. In 2002 they came together with Tommy to produce an unofficial demo which was heard only by record companies, with the exception of the song “Six Feet Under’s Not Deep Enough” which was posted on the band’s website. This demo included a cover of Kylie Minogue’s “Confide in Me.” The band won a competition at in May of 2005, for which their prize was inclusion in a compilation cd. In late 2005 they were finally signed by the French label Listenable Records. Their debut album, God Has a Plan For Us All, was released in April 2006. The album features all the tracks from the demo, with the exception of “Child That Walks The Path Of A Man”, which only features as a bonus track on the digipack. The album also includes two tracks from the first album made by Chris and Sarah in 2001, along with another six new tracks. The bassist for the album is Dave Pybus, a friend of Sarah’s and bandmate of Cradle of Filth. The male vocals on “Original Sin” were recorded by Aaron Stainthorpe of My Dying Bride.

Discography (That I Own)

  1. Demo (2002) – The demo of the band Angtoria which can only be found on music download sites. What makes Angtoria different from most bands is the lead singer Sarah Deva. Her voice is very versatile, four octaves, and highly melodic and dramatic. Although the demo features only five songs, the band manages to achieve and outstanding tour de force of showcasing all their abilities and also all the different elements that make their music rich and varied, from the uptempo guitar riffs to the highly melodic and dramatic parts. This band forces the listener on a journey through deep emotions.
  2. God Has A Plan For Us All (2006) – The first album by Angtoria. The band uses captivating arrangements, which are reminiscent of horror movies, mixed with thick guitars and the low pitch and powerful vocals of Sarah Deva. This album has a lot of songs that deal with mental and physical abuse, but it also has some uplifting moments. According to the band, the premise of the album is to showcase that these bad things can happen in your life and that you need to hold on to your faith. That God has a plan for us all.

In Conclusion
Angtoria is an acquired taste. What I like is the fact that most of the tunes always have catchy almost mesmerizing choruses despite their relatively complex instrumentation. I like the sound of Sarah Deva’s voice. She’s a switch from the usually high soprano vocalists.
